The doctors do several tests to determine your genetic make-up, so they can find the right animal to match your needs. After replacing your heart with a pig heart, you recover and go on with everyday life. No one had to die, and you received your heart. With today's technology, this, and more human benefits, will be made possible with animal cloning. The process of cloning is very complicated and involves making a genetically identical organism through non-sexual means (Olson). There are different ways to produce a clone, but one of the most common procedures is carried out by cell nuclear replacement. This procedure is often used because it is easier to target specific genes, so the DNA strands can be altered (Olson). In this procedure, the donor egg and a somatic cell from the animal are used to be cloned. The nucleus, which contains the genetic material, is removed from the donor egg and replaced with the nucleus from the cell of the animal to be cloned. "This creates a cloned embryo, which is then stimulated to begin dividing" (Centre). Animal cloning controversies rose after 1997 when Ian Wilmut cloned the first mammal (sheep), named Dolly, from an adult cell (Wilmut, 21). Dear Parents: The Elementary Science Club will be having its annual Investigatory Projects Exhibition on Saturday, May 29, 2009, at the school auditorium. In this regard, I would like to seek for you permission to allow your son/daughter to be present on May 22 and 29, both Saturdays, for the activity. As part of the Science Club, he/she will be working with co-members in preparing an Investigatory Project for the exhibit. The theme for this year’s exhibit is â€Å"Science in the Face of the Global Financial Crisis. The project will be started on May 22. Then, the works of the students will be showcased on the event come May 29. Through the years, breakthrough projects have been discovered in this annual activity. Similarly this year, three winners will be selected. The grand prize-winning entry will be brought to the state competitions. Last year, the school is proud to take home the third prize for the state championship. It is the school’s thrust to create holistic development for your children. I personally understand that after school, you would like your children to perform other activities, perhaps activities at home or in some other endeavor where you would like your children to excel. The Science Club has the same objectives. Activities such as this helps your children apply their classroom learning into action. I believe that you want this exposure for your children. The terminologies that the metric system of measurement uses are also very simple for students compared to those presented in other systems of measurements. Another advantage of the system is that it is easy to use and convert from one unit to the other. In spite of the fact that there are very many advantages that the US will get if it uses the metric system of measures, there are a few disadvantages that it might also face. One major disadvantage is the fact that the metric system, unlike the standard system that is common in the US, does not use fractions. Instead, the US uses decimal points. The nearest GSN station, in Sri Lanka, recorded 9.2 cm of vertical motion without distortion. Compare this to 1964, when the machines of the World Wide Standardized Seismic Network were knocked off scale for hours by the March 27 Alaskan quake. The Sumatra earthquake proves that the GSN network is robust and sensitive enough to use for expanded tsunami detection and warnings if the right resources can be spent on supporting instrumentation and facilities. The GSN data includes some eye-popping facts. At every spot on Earth, the ground was raised and lowered at least a full centimeter by the seismic waves from Sumatra. The Rayleigh surface waves traveled around the planet several times before dissipating. Seismic energy was released at such long wavelengths that they were a substantial fraction of the Earths circumference. Their interference patterns formed standing waves, like the rhythmic oscillations in a large soap bubble. In effect, the Sumatra earthquake made the Earth ring with these free oscillations like a hammer rings a bell. The notes of the bell, or normal vibrational modes, are at extremely low frequencies: the two strongest modes have periods of about 35.5 and 54 minutes. These oscillations died out within a few weeks. Another mode, the so-called breathing mode, consists of the whole Earth rising and falling at once with a period of 20.5 minutes.
